Downloading 'streaming' files..

by Dan Claydon on 11 April 2004. Read 301 times.

Before I start this, I realise that this can be abused but the reason I'm putting it up is because not everybody has super-fast connections where they can stream videos and songs without them stopping to buffer every half minute or so. If people object to this article then email me at dan@gamefoe.co.uk and I may take it down...

OK so you want to be able to download the videos from various websites where you are only allowed to stream them? You've come to the right place. This also applies to music or other types of media that I can't think of right now.

First, find the link that starts the streaming of the file, then right click it and 'save target as'. This will download a file to your PC that is only about 40kb or so, if it is bigger (as in several mb or more, depending on the media type then chances are you are already downloading the song/video!)

Once you have the file on you computer, rename it so instead of being *.m3u (for example) it is *.txt, then open the file in notepad.

All being well and good all you should see is a URL to the file you want to download (and not stream). Copy this and paste it into internet explorer and download it, if it still trys to stream try copying it into a link (on a forum or something, or temp. website) then right click and save target at.

There you have it, that video that will play without stopping every 30 seconds!

Note: If the URL you get in the txt file begins with mms:// then you won't be able to download it whatever you do, unless you use specific software which I know nothing about!
