The Attika State
Rich: Name? Position in the band?
Warren: warren, I play guitar and do a wee bit of singing sometimes
Rich: How would you describe The Attika State?
Warren: we r basically a balls to the wall rock band... there are light bits... there a heavy bits... but whatever the direction the music takes be it... punk pop rock drum 'n' bass African drum marching music... it will always be glued together with a sense of melody
Rich: Did your 3 track demo The Attika State Presents come out the way that you planned?
Warren: pretty much... we had recorded Relief Wax and Vinegar [Hill] once before with our old drummer so we all new then really, really well and new what changes we wanted to make, but, Downside [Of Perfect] was pretty new, but I am pretty happy with the performances and the production... could be a bit bigger in places but hey... its a demo... and Alex Wilson who recorded it for us (Pitchblend) did an awesome job
Rich: Any plans to record in the future?
Warren: Yes definitely, hopefully in the next 6 months. We have got a record written that we are all really pleased with, so at some point this year after gigging the songs to within an inch of their lives we wanna go and record. Possibly with Alex Wilson again and get it sounding exactly like we want it to sound
Rich: Do you think that your band would benefit more from having a producer who uses a lot of pro tools etc, for example Mark Trombino (Jimmy Eat World, Finch, The Starting Line) or more simple production like Jerry Finn?
Warren: To be quite honest pro tools (or any digital recording technique) is just a quicker way of editing stuff the way they get that super produced sound is the stuff they run it thru, u know but... I think we will defiantly wanna be going for an open and airy sound with it being tight and heavy at the same time. I mean look at Supercharger by Machinehead. That was completely done on analog studios and it sou8nds immense... just means you got be better at your instruments and your songs.
Rich: True. Ok so you mentioned Deftones and I know you're into The Get Up Kids, what other bands are you really into at the moment?
Warren: I don't remember saying Deftones, but they are immense. umm right now its pretty all about Coheed and Cambria. Their new record is a bloody good nothing touches it. But Thursday, Thrice. A band called The Rocket Summer, Rufio, Queen, David Lopan, Every Time I Die. A real mix of stuff.
Rich: Have you got any plans to tour yet?
Warren: Well we would all love to tour... and we might be doing a stint with a band called Itch up north at some point but as everyone still has to hold down day jobs it s difficult. So we are just trying to conquer the south of England and Wales first and then hopefully... we will get some kind of management and label to back us up.
Rich: well I have noticed, that most people who hear you, really rave about you, obvious ampwire are really into you, our site, and I mean all the staff not just me, so, I think it's only a matter of time. You've mentioned Pitchblend and you're played a bit with Adzuki, what other UK bands are you into?
Warren: there are quite a few... David Lopan are really good Saetia meets Hopesfall esque hardcore band...and I saw The Birds Of Paradise the other day and they truly kicked my ass... they were soo good!!! Rufio esque band called Old Firm Derby are really good as well... as r a band called Itch... Bristol bands too such as Grebo and AKO r pretty good. My Awesome Compilation too, they are the pups nuts.
Rich: What do you think about the demise of MP3.com, seeing as you were hosted on it?
Warren: That sucked serious ass. I spent hours trailing mp3.com looking for bands in my final year at uni. It was fun to do, I found the rocket summer on there. It was such a helpful resource especially as people could put there own stations together. And having a lot of plays on mp3 dot com really meant something. We had a couple of thousand I think
Rich: Yeah, have you checked out www.purevolume.com? It's like the new MP3.com. Check out Adelphi Rock on there, great great band. What do you think about sites like Kazaa and the old Napster etc?
Warren: Well... I think its pretty helpful for finding obscure stuff and I have found many, many bands via napster and kazaa who I end up going out to see and buying merch from and most of the time end up buying there cd's too
Rich: So you're for it?
Warren: I think you should be able to listen to a record before u buy it... but it is a bit harsh for people who solely download. But I think the statistics show that people who download music spend 33% more than people who don't. So go figure.
Rich: Well you got anything else you want to add?
Warren: Just a thank you to Rich for being an all round tops fella and helping us ... and please go to www.theattikastate.co.uk and have a listen... if you like then jump on the mailing list... we appreciate anyone who has given our band the time of day and hope to play to many more... we are playing the Carling Academy in Islington next week on Thursday the 15th so if you can please make it down... bye
Rich: Cheers Warren.
