Noita - Cold Red (Single)

by Rich on 20051018

Niota are only a relatively new band having formed in 2003 in a reaction to their lack of belief in their local Essex rock scene and it was probably a good jot that they did. It’s not really very easy to gauge what a band are like from only hearing two tracks, especially when the tracks are as diverse in style as these two are at times.

Opening track Paper Fuse, sounds like a lesser established Funeral For A Friend or Days In December, with melodic hooks, a similar, although not quite as impressive, vocal style and the hook laden metal based guitars with big breakdowns. Throughout the track things turn heavier and towards the end of the track we get a lot more metal than emo which is something that in this case works fairly well.

Second track “Shatter” starts where the last track left off but with a distinctly different vocals style, a more guttural scream rather than soaring melodic tones dominate and although sounding a little bit like bald headed metal men Disturbed at times, again it somehow works. This certainly isn’t a perfect single, the production, especially the drum sound could be better and it’s certainly not the most original sound in the world but Niota do offer their own twist on things which is refreshing. Ones to keep an eye on.
