All American Rejects, Motion City Soundtrack, Limbeck - Bristol Academy, 19/11/03

The first band on tonight are Limbeck. Their country tinged rock is very well recieved tonight and the songs are all very solid and catchy, the sound is great and most importantly they are different to most of whats out in the world of punk rock. Stand out song was Brand New Orange. A Great way kick off the set.

Motion City Soundtrack were here to steel the show. And quite simply they did. Allthough their sound was very dominated by drums and vocals, the quailty of the songs shines through live. Great songs like Shiver, The Future Freaks Me Out and Boombox Generation are played brilliantly. Pierre's vocals are outstanding and closing song My Favourite Accident is a great parting shot.

So to headliners All American Rejects. Their sound is awesome and that is about all. One of the things that i find annoying about this band is that they often play to backing tracks that keep the songs identical to the record. It wouldn't hurt live to skip most of these intros of lean to play them live, as it's mainly just drums anyway.

Their stage "act" is just that. You don't feel that you are seeing the real side of the band at all, it's all just alot of swearing and are you ready's that seem hollow. But that isn't the main problem, it's that they don't have the songs to back all this up. Most of them sound weak and generic.

There are some good moments through. "Too Far Gone" and "Swing Swing" are good songs, that because of the great sound, sound amazing and the encore of the acoustic "Cigaretter Song" and "The Last Song" where all the other band memnbers are brought on stage for a great sing along.

A special mention needs to go out to Andy the Merch guy who because of the Academy's policies on selling merch was turned into an MC and general laugh. Great stuff.
